The Sacred Song

What is Vande Matharam?

A hymn of divine reverence to the Motherland, written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1882, that became the battle cry of India's freedom movement and touched the soul of a nation.

The Meaning

"Vande Matharam" translates to "I bow to thee, Mother." Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in his 1882 novel Anandamath, the song personifies India as a goddess — lush, fertile, and nurturing — deserving of reverence and devotion from all her children.

Historical Importance

First sung at the Indian National Congress session in 1896 by Rabindranath Tagore, it became a rallying cry during the Swadeshi Movement of 1905 and the broader independence struggle. The British colonial administration tried to ban it — a testament to its revolutionary power.

Freedom Connection

Thousands of freedom fighters sang "Vande Matharam" as they marched to prison, faced bullets, and gave their lives. On 24 January 1950, the Constituent Assembly declared it the National Song of independent India — a song that unites 1.4 billion hearts.
